1979 年由奔驰与斯太尔-戴姆勒-普赫（Steyr-Daimler-Puch）在格拉茨联合开发，最初是军用车。至今仍在格拉茨的 Magna Steyr 工厂手工生产。2018 年换代时保留了梯形大梁、后整体桥和三把差速锁，只把前轴改成独立悬挂。
